LINKMED® Interface Tutorial: HL7 ADT Event Types
5.0 ADT Transaction, Trigger Events and Message Definitions

Most often, the information is entered into an ADT system, passed to the nursing, ancillary and financial systems in the form of an unsolicited update to a record-oriented query.
The following are a list of trigger events, and the supported message segments. Each ADT message sent is associated with an event.

5.1 Event A01-Admit/Visit Notification (ADT^A01)

An A01 event is intended to be used for "Admitted" patients only. An A01 event is sent as a result of a patient undergoing the admission process which assigns the patient to a bed. It signals the beginning of a patient's stay in a healthcare facility.
The Admit message is as follows:

MSH..[{SFT}]..[UAC]..EVN..PID..[PD1]..[{ARV}]..[{ROL}]..[{NK1}]..PV1..[PV2]..[{ARV}]..[{ROL}]..[{DB1}]..
[{OBX}]..[{AL1}]..[{DG1}]..[DRG]..[{PR1}]..{{ROL}]..[{GT1}]..[{IN1}]..[IN2]..[{IN3}]..[{ROL}]..[ACC]..[UB1]..
[UB2]..[PDA}]

5.2 Event A02-Transfer a Patient (ADT^A02)

An A02 event is issued as a result of the patient changing his or her assigned physical location.
The transfer message is as follows:

MSH..[{ SFT }]..[UAC]..EVN..PID..[PD1]..[{ARV}]..[{ROL}]..PV1..[PV2}..[{ARV}]..[{ROL}]..[DB1]..[{OBX}]..[PDA]

5.3 Event A03-Discharge a Patient (ADT^A03)
An A03 event signals the end of a patient's stay in a healthcare facility. It signals that the patient's status has changed to "discharged" and that a discharge date has been recorded. The patient is no longer in the facility. The patient's location prior to discharge should be entered in PV1-3 - Assigned Patient Location.
The Discharge message is as follows:

MSH..[{SFT}]..[UAC]..EVN..PID..[PD1]..[{ARV}]..[{ROL}]..[{NK1}]..PV1..[PV2]..[{ARV]}..[{ROL}]..[{DB1}]..
[{AL1}]..[{DG1}]..[DRG]..[PR1]..[{ROL}]..[{OBX}]..[{IN1}]..[IN2]..[{IN3}]..[{ROL}]..[ACC]..[PDA]
